Archae

Assalamualaikum and Good Morning Dr. Wan! J

I’m so sorry because I’m not updating my blog for three weeks. So I decided to make it by topics.

So, for the second topic of Microbial Systematic is Archae.

The extreme habitats for Archae are ; cold environments, hot environments, high salinity and anaerobic environments.

Based on phylogenetic classification, there are two phylum :

        I.            Euryarchaeota
Occupy many different ecological niches and with a variety of metabolic patterns.

      II.            Crenarchaeota
Mostly thermophiles and hyperthermophiles.

Recent 16S rRNA analyses suggest an additional phyla :

    III.            Thaumarchaeota
Mesophile crenarchaeota

The unique features of Archae :
·         Cell wall
·         Membrane lipids
·         Metabolism
·         Genetics

Phyla Crenarchaeota

·         Mostly thermophiles (45°C), hyperthermophiles (80°C), extremely thermophilic (105°C), acidophiles and sulphur dependent.
·         Mostly strict anaerobes
·         Habitat : geothermallly heated water or soils with elemental sulphur.
·         2 representative genera :
ü  Geogemma
ü  Pyrodictium

Phyla Euryarchaeota

        I.            Methanogens
      II.            Halophiles

till we meet again, BYE!
