REFLECTION ON VIRTUAL MICROBES 2017~~

ASSALAMUALAIKUM W.B.T

So, this is my reflection on the second virtual microbes. Oh ya! It has been a semester not writing in this blog. (haha)

As usual, the positive feedback of this program is the students capable of co-operating and interacting with other people virtually. I also able to widen my circle of friends through this program as this is the collaboration program with UM and UKM.  Besides, they also will be exposed by several websites that are useful for the discussion session such as Zoom, Padlet, OpenLearning and Blendspace.

Instead of having the positive feedback I also want to state the problems during completing this program.

As all of us know, there are 6 days of not having electrical supply, it’s hard for us to make this LR. We have to go to somewhere else which have electrics to complete this LR including IOI City Mall. (haha).

Next, the problem with UM students. They just join till the second discussion (padlet), it makes us hard to do this LR as we divided the task to them too. I’m sorry if I’m wrong but I think if they can’t join this program until the end, it’s better for them not to join this program at all. This is because, the task were divided to them, but they doesn’t complete it because they thought they just involve until discussion 2. So at the end, their task have to be completed by us, we have to search for journals and paraphrase all then cite the LR at the last minute. So, it’s better for them not to join at all as they don't contribute anything to the group. They don’t get any marks but we have to be evaluated, it is just not fair for us.

For improvement, I would suggest that the collaboration with other universities must be with the university that evaluates their students just like us, so that the students will do this LR by heart. They won’t do this LR slothfully if they were given marks. Just like us, we did this LR by heart because this LR will contribute 15-20% of our marks.

Besides, I think LR is not a good thing to do in VM. This is because, not all student able to do it in a group if we can’t sit down and discuss, check and finalize the LR face to face with our group members. I think, for the next program I would suggest doing VM just like previous VM, it easier for us as LR is too complicated to do it virtually. I’m sorry to say that but I said this for a better VM next time.

Lastly, the collaboration of university must be until the end of this program as it will not trouble other group members.

That’s all from me. I’m sorry and thank you J

Virtual Microbes~~

Hi and Assalamualaikum! Sooo, it’s been a long time I’m not writing on this site! I’m a third year student now and this is my fifth semester! Another three semesters to go! Hee J

This is my reflection on our new collaboration program with UKM’s students! This programme entitled Virtual Microbes! It just like Adopt a Microbe that we have done during first year but this time we have to adopt a VIRUS!

So, I would like to say thank you to all my friends and my group members from UKM and UPM for having such a great teamwork in order to complete our task!

All the reports are submitted on time (even though sometimes there was no internet connection, cross schedule and blablabla) hee J but we managed to complete it even though we are so busy with our schedule. UKM students with their FYP and me and my friends with our daily routines (non-stop assignments, test, presentation and blablabla)

Sincerely, first time that we are announced about this program, we are just like “Alaa, ummm, hmmm, whyyyy.” But at last “NAH! DONE!” Thank you Dr Wan for giving us opportunity to collaborate with other university students. It’s a memorable experienced that we have to struggle recording the video in dark places with just a light from a torchlight! Such a memorable time together.

Sorry all if there are some misunderstanding or some word that might hurt you all and sorry Dr Wan if we disturb your time asking this and that. Hee Thankyou all! Bye! :D

MICROBIAL ECOLOGY SEMESTER FOUR

1.       Learning outcomes and what had I learnt
·         In the first part of semester, I learnt about:
-          Definition of ecology
-          Energy flow balance
-          Factors that affect the distribution of microbial
-          Distinguishing the microbes according to their categories
-          Metabolism and nutrition
-          List out microbial groups

·         In the other half of semester, I learnt about:
-          Human microbiome
-          Comparing the microbial population between healthy or disease states and different organ
-          Nitrogen cycle
-          Distinguish between nitrogen fixation, ammonium assimilation, ammonification, nitrification and denitrification
-          Describing aerosol and bioaerosol
-          Describe factors that affect microbial population in atmosphere
-          Describe factors that affect microbial population in freshwater and marine habitat
-          Learn about soil and SOM formation
-          Describe physiochemical factors affecting microbial population in soil
-          Describe extrinsic and intrinsic factor affecting microbial population in food
-          Describe foodborne pathogen and disease
-          Distinguish types of microbial interaction
-          Describe wastewater treatment processes
-          Define recalcitrant molecules and xenobiotics
-          Distinguish types of bioremediation

2.       Experience in doing MICROBES AND US project
It is good to be worked with my group members especially Raidah, Nath and Aina. We have to write the article and find the information about food microbes. Malik and Syafiq need to complete the subtitle of the video and all about the video we ask the boys to do it. Megat’s part was the infographic. Whatever information that we got, we give to Megat to do the infographic. Alhamdulillah, I get a group that commit with their jobs. We manage to complete all the elements within three days ONLY! Superb right? HAHAHA. It just because we thought that we are going to present it on Monday. After attend the Monday class with Dr Wan, our presentation was postponed on 30th May. Thank God!

Besides, I also gain a new experience to interview public. We went to Sri Serdang and Kafe Serumpun to do the documentary video. And also, in order to comple the documentary video, I’ve gained new experience in interviewing professional that is Prof. Shuhaimi. Overall, the MICROBE AND US project was too awesome too handle >.<!

3.       How do I relate the microbial ecology of microbiology courses that have been discussed in the previous semester and how I can use that knowledge in the future?
When I finished this course, I manage to relate the concepts of classification, evolution and growth of microorganisms with everyday lives.  In general, I understand how microbes survived and related with food. We had learnt the improper food handling processes will lead to the contamination of the food. Besides, the microbes also give beneficial to the food such as act as probiotic, helps in preservative and many more. In contrast, we also gained knowledge in growing plants. The part of the soils that are more nutritious and where the suitable place to grow in order to get a healthier plant.

till we meet again! Byeeee! :)

The Awesome Microbe Carnival (AMC)

Assalamualaikum and Hi Dr Wan!

It's been a long time not writing here because of hectic semester of second year degree. Hmm I can't imagine how busy you are as a lecturer. Handling  hundreds of students. :( Sorry for late posting this reflective journal.

Actually the purpose of this post is to write about our department event on 19 & 20 November that was The Awesome Microbe Carnival!

It was a super duper successful event with a lot of people from others education institute such as UiTM, Kolej Mara Kuala Nerang, secondary schools and primary schools. I never imagine that this event will be huge a great event!

The purpose of this event was to highlight our course, that is Microbiology. We want to show to the world that we are special! We can see tiny particles that other peoples cannot see (but using microscope lah. Hehe)

There were many stalls outside the hall. They sold foods and beverages that made from microbes such as tempe, tapai, kim bum, yogurt and there were cute mini cupcakes that has been made by Dr. Norhidayah and crews. The cupcakes actually a normal cupcakes but the topping was an image of Microbes.

As we're divide our part, first year and second year students' duty were on poster, we just help on activities booth inside the hall. A lot of games during the carnival such as, kahoot! amino acid, how to streak on plate and puzzle.

Our poster was on Golgi apparatus and Endoplamic reticulum. We’re evaluated by Dr. Amalia and another one was a Chinese girl, maybe she is a post graduate student. I hope we get a great mark from what we present to them.

So, from this event I get to know my juniors and seniors. I also can cooperate with them before, during and after the event. They are kind and can tolerate each other. They are also helpful. For example, during the event, there are some student got classes, and juniors or senior will take over the duty. This event is so happening, but if it is held during other week it will be better because during that week we got three tests and we’re so busy studying and can focus more on this event.

That’ all from me, till we meet again. Thank you! J

Amino Acid and Proteins ~

Assalamualaikum and Good morning Dr Wan.

Chapter 4 is conducted by Dr Amalia. She’s so cute! Hahahaha

So, the next chapter is on Amino Acids and Proteins.

Basically, we’ve learnt all of this in last semester in Biomolecules.

We’ve learnt about the basic structure of amino acid.

We also learnt that the classification of amino acid is based on the R-group

Amino acids make a peptide bond from N-terminus to C-terminus and become a protein.

In protein, there are primary structure, secondary structure, tertiary structure, and quaternary structure.

There two things that we are not learn yet in Biomolecules, that are loop and turn.

Turns is shorter than loops means they only contain not less than 5 amino acids per turns.

While loops is longer that is up to five amino acid that reverse a direction of a polypeptide chain.

At the end of the class, Dr Amalia gave us some quiz on the chapter that we’ve learnt that day.

I think, that’s all for this chapter, Thankyou! J
Till we meet again! XOXO

Intracellular Structures of Prokaryote

Assalamualaikum and Good morning Dr Wan.

The next chapter is Intracellular Structures of Prokaryotes.

In this chapter, we’re doing in group a presentation on topic that we chose.

We’ve learnt about the structure, chemistry and function of each of the structures internal to the cell wall of prokaryotes.

The intracellular structures include:
  • Plasma membrane

·         Passive transport
ü  Simple diffusion
ü  Facilitated diffusion
ü  Osmosis

·         Active transport
ü  Active transtport
ü  Group translocation
  • Cytoplasm

  • Nuclear area

  • Plasmid

  • Ribosomes

  • Inclusions
        Granules
ü  Metachromatic granules
ü  Polysaccharide granules
ü  Sulfur granules

·         Vesicles
ü  Gas vacuole
ü  Carboxysome
ü  Magnetosome
ü Lipid deposits

  • Endospores and the infectious disease caused by endospores

Cell Wall and Membrane Structure of Prokaryote~

Assalamualaikum and Good morning Dr Wan.

Today I want to summarize the next chapter that is Cell Wall and Membrane Structure of Prokaryote.

This topic is quite simple. We just learn again what we’ve learnt in first semester and second semester.

We’ve learnt about the external structure to the cell wall and their function. The external structure include :
  • Glycocalyx
  • Flagella
  • Axial filaments
  • Fimbrae
  • Pili

We also learn about the differences and similarities of cell wall for Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria

Comparison between the cell wall of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria

I think that’s all roughly about this chapter. Thankyou

Till we meet again! XOXO
