NEW SEM NEW LECTURER NEW SPIRIT

[WEEK1-WEEK7]

Salam ‘alaik and good morning Dr. Wan !

It have been a long time that I'm not updated my blog  since week 14 last sem. So, today I want to summarized what I've learn for a half of semester with Dr. Seow Chin Chin.

She is a good lecturer!  For the half of the semester, she only teach us two chapters of Microbiology II that are Microbial Taxonomy and Immunology.

As for me,  Microbial Taxonomy is quite easy as we have learnt the three parts of taxonomy that are nomenclature, classification and identification.

We learnt how to name the microbes and established it in a legal way for nomenclature. This is a part of microbial taxonomy in Microbiology I. the basic in Microbiology I, we have detailed  in this semester. We learnt the two type of Bergey’s Manual that is systematic and determinative. We also have to do our first assignment on week 1 that was we have to find the two types of Bergey’s Manual at Sultan Abdul Samad Library and have to have a look on what the contents, we also have to take a picture of the book cover of Bergey’s Manual and submitted it in Edmodo.

Besides, we learnt about classification have three ways that are ; Phenetic, Phylogenetic and Genotypic. We also learnt technique to get a strain of bacteria and how to isolate the DNA. Next for this chapter, we have learnt the technique for determining microbial taxonomy and phylogeny are divided into two that are ; classical characteristic and molecular characteristics.

For the last part of Microbial Taxonomy was identification. In this part we have learnt the identification methods are :
1)      Microscopic examination
2)      Growth and biochemical characteristic
3)      Immunologic test’
4)      Bacteriophage typing
5)      Antibiotic susceptibility test
6)      Molecular methods
For the molecular methods we had learnt in classification, for this part we just learnt about the nucleic acid probes and plasmid fingerprinting.

At the end of this chapter we were having our fabulous Test 1! And Alhamdulillah, I’m satisfied with my result even though it was not as excellent as Radin’s result. J

Next chapter was Immunology. I think this chapter was hard to understand. But Dr Chin Chin had tried her best to make us understand one by one in this chapter.

In this chapter we learnt the two types of Immunity that were non-specific immunity and specific immunity.

In non-specific immunity it has internal innate immunity and external innate immunity. For the internal innate immunity there were three mechanisms of protection that are physiological barrier, phagocytosis and inflammation.  Besides, for the external innate immunity it prevent penetration of pathogens into tissue such as skin, mucous membranes and normal microbiota.

In  the specific immunity we have humoral immunity and cell-mediated immunity. In the humoral immunity we learnt how antibodies give protection to us, the antigen binding sites will bind to the epitopes to function to give protection through neutralization, agglutination, opsonisation, activation of complement and ADCC. Next, in cell-mediated immunity we learnt the granule exocytosis and Fas pathway in CD8 T cell mechanisms. We also covered the last part of immunology that was DTH reaction.

We were having our quiz on the last lecture with Dr Chin Chin on Immunology! And our group was the first runner up! And for Test 2 on 29th June is on Immunology. Pray for us to get good a result Dr Wan!

Till we meet again, thankyou! J
