Last lecture of BMY3102, second semester, first year ! :) ~

Assalamualaikum and Good Morning Dr. Wan! J

The last lecture with Dr. Wan was on topic Biogeochemical Cycles and Aspect of Biotechnology in Microbial Ecology .

So, in this topic we have done watching Powtoon, answered quiz on quizlet and do crossword in kubbu.

The characteristic of biogeochemical cycles are :
a)      Transformed and cycled through oxidation-reduction reactions
b)      All cycles are linked

Carbon Cycle

·         Aerobic
·         Anaerobic
·         Reduced form of carbon are methane and organic matter
·         Oxidized form of carbon are carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide

Nitrogen Cycle

Nitrogen Cycle have three major processes :

·         Nitrification
·         Denitrification
·         Nitrogen fixation involve anammox process

Sulfur Cycle

Sulfur Cycle involve three major processes :

·         Sulfur oxidation
·         Sulfur reduction
·         Sulfate reduction (assimilatory/dissimilatory)

Iron Cycle

Dr Wan said “This is the simplest and the easiest cycle)
Its only involve oxidation for aerobic and reduction process for anaerobic.

Manganase Cycle

This cycle also simple and easy which are Manganase ion undergoes oxidation into Manganic ion for aerobic  while Manganic ion undergoes reduction into Manganase ion in anaerobic.

In topic Aspect of Biotechnology in Microbial Ecology what I’ve learnt  :

1.      Function of microorganism in microbial ecology
2.      Application of microbial
3.      Bioremediation
4.      Types of phytoremediation

Function of microorganisms in microbial ecology are :

·         Microorganisms as pollutants
·         Microorganisms as cause of pollution
·         Microorganisms as indicator of pollution
·         Microorganisms may reduce pollution

 Microbial application :

·         As  pesticide
-          Biodegradable pesticide
-          Biological insecticide

Bioremediation

Definition : the use of living organisms to promote the degradation of environmental pollutants (artificially/ increase the growth of naturally occurring microorganisms)

Function of microorganisms in bioremediation are :

·         Use the contaminant as nutrient for reproduction
·         Converts contaminant to less harmful form to release to environment

Types of Phytoremediation are :

·         Phytoextraction
·         Phytodegradation
·         Rhizofiltration
·         Phytostabilization
·         Phytovolatilization

That’s all for our last lecture, hopefully I’ll get A in this course. Aminn J

Till we meet again next sem, BYE! J
